A FINE 16-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING RIFLE, serial no. 8645,
circa 1850, with 29in. browned five-groove rifled barrels, the top-rib signed 'REILLY. NEW OXFORD STREET LONDON', block fore-sight with nickel blade, blocked rear-sight with three folding and one standing leaf, scroll engraved colour-hardened breeches, platinum vents, scroll engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'REILLY LONDON' (traces of colour), blued sliding safes forwards of the hammers, scroll engraving to the bodies of the bevel-edged hammers with shell engraving to the heads, chequered walnut pistol-grip half-stock, round iron patch-box to right hand side of butt engraved with a standing stag in a woodland setting surrounded by an engraved border and scroll engraved hinge (traces of colour), iron heel-plate engraved on the ear with a stag at rest, silver escutcheon to underside of butt, scroll engraved iron pistolgrip cap (traces of colour), blued trigger-guard and tang, the bow engraved with stags at rut, scroll engraved bar and ball finial, scroll engraved iron take-down wedge escutcheons and ramrod throat, eyelets for sling and original brass mounted ebony ramrod, the barrels with some staining but the whole retaining a fair amount of original finish
