A CASED .44 PERCUSSION SILVER-PLATED AND ENGRAVED SIX-SHOT REVOLVER, UNSIGNED, MODEL 'COLT'S 1860 ARMY', serial no. 46694,
possibly based on a second series Colt Army, with 8in. barrel engraved with 'COLONEL JAMES E. CHILDE' (sic.), engraved band and scrolls at muzzle, further scroll engraving extending from breech to approximately half-way along barrel, border and scroll engraved stepped cylinder, scroll engraved 'four-screw' open action marked 'COLT'S PATENT', engraved backstrap, the top engraved with an shield bearing stars and stripes, polished buffalo horn smooth one-piece grip, the sides inlet with white-metal shields engraved with a 'J.E.C.' monogram on the right and '4TH PA CAV.' on the right, scroll engraved trigger-guard bow and under barrel rammer with chequered end, the whole retaining all its silver-plated finish with blued screws TOGETHER WITH a later mahogany box with reproduction Colt trade label and reproduction silver-plated scissors mould and Colt marshall flask
Provenance: This spuriously dedicated revolver is attempting to emulate one presented to Col. Jas. H. Childs of the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry, who whilst in temporary command of and belonging to Averill's Brigade, fell mortally wounded on the morning of Sept. 17, 1862 in Maryland, just west of Antietam Creek during the American Civil war
