AN UNUSUAL CUP-HILTED SWORD,
circa 1890, probably South American, with broad straight double-edged 36in. blade etched with foliage and scrolls for the first half of its length, the etching also including martial trophies and a shield with the legend 'LIBERTAD' beneath and a ribbon bearing the dates '19 DE APRIL DE 1810' and '5 DE JULIO DE 1811', twin central fullers for the first third of the blade, nickel bowl-guard with turned-back edge, possibly originally covered (small losses to edge), straight nickel cross-guard with bee-hive terminals, nickel 'D' shaped knuckle-bow and bulbous pommel, spirally ribbed leather grip TOGETHER WITH its original nickel scabbard with twin suspension rings (nickel tarnished throughout)
