Research would indicate that Bullen-Smith enjoyed a long and successful army career spent mainly with The Prince of Wales's Leinster Regiment. The Edinburgh Gazette recorded in June 1915, when he was a major, that he had been made a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order. By the end of the Great War he had risen to the rank of Brigadier-General.
