25 5/8in. nitro reproved barrel (in 2012) with raised filed rib, open sights and two folding leaf sights for 100, 200 and 300 yards and ramped blade fore-sight, receiver ring, detachable magazine and furniture with acanthus scroll engraving, bolt cover engraved 'SHOT & REGULATED BY HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND ST. LONDON.', tang with B.S.A. 1897 patent sliding safety and engraved 'B.S.A. PAT. 28834 / 97', pistolgrip stock with horn finial, insert repair at head, sling eyes, pistolgrip-cap, 14 3/8in. pull including steel buttplate (with trap)

Provenance: The regulators have kindly informed us that this rifle was completed February 1907 for Colonel Gunthorpe.

The gentleman referred to is probably Col. Edward James Gunthorpe, born January 1842. He was appointed to the 11th Madras Native Infantry in 1863 and served in the Abyssinian campaign attached to the 2nd Bombay Grenadiers. He was appointed to the Civil Department in November 1871, as District Superintendant of Police, Hyderabad, became Colonel in September 1889, was appointed Commandant of the Behar Volunteer Rifle Corps in January 1892. He later returned to his native England where he dies December 1916.
