A JAPANESE 'NAGINATA' POLE-ARM
late Edo period, circa 1860, with approximately 88in. shaft and 19 1/2in. curved blade, the shaft with carved crescent to butt with copper reinforcing band, painted longitudinal lines for the first 69in. of its length, simple swamped iron cross-guard held by red-painted rope bindings, the remainder covered in ribbed black laquer with three bronze reinforcing bands, the throat in brass with pierced heart-shaped motifs, the blade with long tang with unidentified signatures to both sides and short fuller infilled with red paint (blade stained with mild surface pitting, slight flaw at tip)
