30in. nitro reproved barrels, sunken ribs engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL', and '1' and '2', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke (No.1) and 1/4 and 3/4 (No.2), self-opening actions with broad fences carved in relief with leaf motifs, slender toplevers, automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, striker discs, arrow cocking-indicators, best fine bouquet and scroll engraving, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 14 1/4in. well-figured stock (No.1) and 14 3/4in. well-figured stock, cracked and repaired at hand, including 1/2in. wooden extension (No.2), weight 6lb. 12oz., in their brass-cornered oak and leather case
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this pair of shotguns were completed September 1881 with 30in. barrels (that they subsequently nitro-proofed in February 1966) for G.A. Gadsden.
