30 1/8in. black powder only reproved bold damascus barrel, engraved 'JOSh. LANG & SONS. 22 COCKSPUR STREET. LONDON.', 2 1/2in. chamber, bored approx. true cyl. Jones patent rotary-underlever, arcaded standing breech, unusual centered percussion fence, rebounding back-action lock, hammer with hare's-ear spur and extended nose to strike centrally placed firing pin, fine beaded border and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining traces of original colour-hardening, 13 1/2in. figured stock with engraved steel heel and toe plates, fore-end with carved horn finial, small chip left edge, weight 5lb. 7oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this shotgun was completed 1864 with 30in. barrels for Sir H. Bruce.
Sir Henry Bruce, 3rd Baronet was born September 1820 and enjoyed a successful political career as a Irish Conservative. He was M.P. for Coleraine from 1862 until 1874 and then again from 1880 to 1885. He also held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Londonderry from 1877 until 1907 and was sworn on to the Privy Council of Ireland in 1899.
