A 16-BORE (BELTED-BALL) PERCUSSION SINGLE-SHOT SPORTING-RIFLE, no visible serial number,
circa 1850, with octagonal re-browned twist-iron 30in. barrel, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sight with two additional folding blades, squared breech engraved with a game-bird, moulded percussion snail with engraved 'plug', scroll engraved top-tang, borderline and scroll engraved bar-action lock signed 'J. MATTHEWS, KENDAL', the front portion of lock also engraved with capercaillie, scroll engraved dolphin-headed hammer, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist (large inlet repair to right hand side of butt executed in antiquity), iron furniture, single set trigger, plain ramrod thimbles and heavy-duty mahogany ramrod (tip replaced)
