A CASED 20-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN, serial no. 9654,
for 1826, probably converted from tubelock, with 30in. twist-iron barrels, the top-rib signed 'JOSEPH MANTON PATENT, HANOVER SQUARE, LONDON', bead fore-sight, floral engraving and bands to the breech, platinum plugs, engraved top-tang, flat, slightly curved bevel-edged border and scroll engraved bar-acton locks with rounded stepped, flat-pointed tails, both locks signed 'JOSEPH MANTON' over the line of an inlet to the front of the plates, slab-sided scroll engraved patent hammers with detachable noses, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, engraved iron furniture and period brass-tipped ramrod TOGETHER WITH a walnut storage box (possibly the original), compartmented and lined in green baize (renewed in antiquity) and complete with two flasks, a nipple-key and sundry cleaning items

Other Notes: W. Keith Neal and D.H.L. Back's book, 'The Mantons, Gunmakers' list gun no. 9654 as a 'double-barrel caplock 24-bore with 30in. barrels and the same address details minus the word 'Patent', although they add this word to the lock signature. They note the gun as being in the collection of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co, USA. Whether this is the same gun is unclear but not outside the realms of possibility
