A .44 (RUSSIAN) NICKEL-PLATED SIX-SHOT DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER, MODEL 'D.A. FIRST MODEL', serial no. 19955,
circa 1895, with 4in. barrel, raised sighting rib signed by the maker and with patent dates to 1880, crescent fore-sight, raised rear-sight notch on the lift-up locking catch, cylinder with longitudinal and blind horizontal flutes, plain frame, chequered hard-rubber grips embossed with the 'S&W' trademark, square-back trigger-guard, the whole re-nickelled with re-blued ancilliaries and the back-strap engraved with the monogram 'G.C.R.R.'
Provenance: This revolver is accompanied by a letter of provenance from the makers, part of which states:
"We have researched your Smith & Wesson .44 and company records indicate that your handgun, with serial number 19955 was shipped from our factory October 1, 1888, and delivered to M.W. Robinson, New York City, New York, Smith & Wesson's largest distributor. The records indicate that this revolver was a 5 inch barrel, nickel finish and checkered [sic] black hard rubber grips. This was part of a large shipment and the initial were not engraved on the backstrap by the factory. It is possible that they could stand for Grand Central Rail Road. Mr. Robinson Company supplied many rail road companies with firearms."
