probably French, circa 1750, with 23in. slightly curved blade (heavily polished and possibly re-profiled at tip), shallow wide fullers to both sides and traces of engraving at forte, cast shell guard depicting a seated hunter and his dog, cast brass 'D' shaped cross-guard and knuckle-bow, turned down dogs-head finial, rayskin grip with brass bar engraved with a hare and brass capped pommel engraved with a fox
