28in. octagonal black powder only barrel with matt top, open sights and two folding leaf sights (moved forward approx. 3in.), bead fore-sight, sides engraved '.300', and 'J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE, 57 & 58 SOUTH AUDLEY ST. LONDON.', carved teardrop fences, removable striker disc, manual lever side-safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, non-selective ejector, border and bold acanthus scroll engraving, retaining slight traces of original colour-hardening, 14 5/8in. figured pistolgrip stock with steel pistolgrip-cap and buttplate, Hackett patent snap fore-end with horn finial, weight 5lb. 11oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this rifle was completed 1886 as a .300 rook rifle for Lord Balfour of Burleigh, the current Lord Balfour's grandfather.
It is now being sold by the family and associated provenance may be found under Lots 1238 and 1337.
