Product Details

A RARE .450 (BOXER) SIX-SHOT NICKEL-PLATED DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER, UNSIGNED, no visible serial number,
Belgian, circa 1878 and possibly of Deville's patent, with 5 1/2in. octagonal barrel, raised angular sighting rib marked 'ESSON, SPRINGFIELD MASS. PAT APR 8. 55. JULY 5. 59. & NOV 21. 65.' within a borderline engraved panel, scroll engraved plain cylinder with rear-notch locking, tip-up hinge forwards of top-strap, locking catch to lower front of frame, scroll engraving to remainder of frame, finely chequered two-piece ebony grips, engraved pommel-cap with facility for lanyard ring, spurred hammer, folding guardless trigger and ejector stud mounted under the barrel, Liege proofs and spurious London marks, much original plated finish

Other Notes: Whilst undoubtedly of good quality this revolver has definitely been built to deceive. The roll-stamped address and patents are identical to that used on the Smith & Wesson Model No 1 1/2 First Issue revolver, and the beginning of the legend has been missed off because of space. Despite owing a considerable amount to the Smith & Wesson design, this, coupled with spurious London proof marks certainly suggests the unknown Belgian manufacturer wanted his customer to believe he was buying something altogether different!
