Product Details

BSA
AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE .280 (BRITISH) SELECTIVE-FIRE EXPERIMENTAL RIFLE, MODEL '28P, No8', serial no. PW3022,
for 1949/50, with blued 22in. barrel, machined muzzle designed for the No5 bayonet and an 'energa grenade', squared blued receiver signed 'RIFLE 28P No8, THE BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS COMPANY LIMITED, BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND', small optical sight mounted to the top marked 'TYPE 'V' No49' together with a British 'broad arrow', three position selector mounted on the left hand side, brushed bright squared bolt, walnut half-stock with pistol-grip and rubber heel-plate, the stock with aperture for a sling (present), the squared fore-end partly concealing the barrel, detachable box magazine and blued steel trigger-guard.

Other Notes: Developed by Claude Perry and Roger Wackrow, the 28P was intended to compete with 'EM' series and 'SLEM' rifles for adoption by British Army, but failed its initial trial after a breech explosion. Operated by Garand type operating rod linked to a sideways mounted tilting bolt, a rack and pinion device retards the rate of fully automatic fire. A modified version solved the problem of premature breech-explosions, but the project was abandoned. An estimated 12-15 examples only were produced.
