A FINE CASED 14-BORE (SMOOTH) & 40-BORE (BELTED-BALL) PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED CAPE-GUN, serial no. 3394,
circa 1865, with browned twist-iron 30in. barrels, the broad 1in. wide file-cut top-rib signed 'JOSEPH BOURNE MAKER, LONDON' in script together with the serial number beneath at the breech-end, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, dove-tailed six leaved folding 'African' rear-sight with one further standing leaf, each leaf featuring central platinum lines, the sighting rib engraved with a scale marked from '1' to '20' in approximately 1in. increments, the edge of the rib dove-tailed to accept a scarce sliding auxilliary ladder rear-sight with an adjustable blade also inlet with a central platinum line (supplied), scroll engraved breech-end with platinum plugs, scroll engraved top-tang, flat border and scroll engraved locks signed 'BOURNE' (much original colour), walnut chequered half-stock, rectangular iron patch-box inlet to right hand side of butt engraved with a running stag within an engraved border, iron heel-plate, blued trigger-guard tang and bow heavy-duty iron-mounted ebony ram-rod, eyelets for sling (missing), the whole retaining much original finish COMPLETE WITH its English market mahogany storage case, escutcheon to lid, the interior lined in plum velvet (faded), parchment trade label to inner lid printed in blue and bearing the legend 'GUN MANUFACTURER TO H.R.H PRINCE ALBERT' and containing a number of period accessories, some possibly original to this gun including a white-metal mounted 'SYKES PATENT' powder flask, circular oil bottle, a leather shot flask and some cast bullets
