36in. Greener trade mark wrought steel nitro barrels with tapered raised matt rib with central cartouche engraved 'W. W. GREENER. MAKER. 68 HAYMARKET. LONDON. WORKS ST. MARY'S SQUARE. BIRMINGHAM.', and engraved with lanciform acanthus scroll detailing at the breech ends, impressive treble-grip scroll-back action with side shoulders, carved serpentine fences, Greener 1873 patent crossbolt, manual side-safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' and arrow detail, Baker patent ejectors, patent no. 17292 of 29th October 1890, profusely engraved with bold acanthus scrollwork on a matted background surrounding oval vignettes of wildfowl in wetland settings, the triggerguard engraved en suite and with a retriever with mallard, the safety housing with a duck alighting, retaining some original colour-hardening, 14 1/4in. well-figured semi-pistolgrip stock with ornately bordered chequering, diamond shaped horn teardrop inserts and horn buttplate, fore-end with Deeley & Edge patent release catch and horn finial, weight 12lb. 4oz., together with a weighted buckled leather extension (extends stock length to 15in. when fitted), in its brass-cornered leather case with some modern W. W. Greener accessories
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this shotgun was completed with 36in. barrels in 1896 for a Mr. Mitsini.
