No. 1 with 27 13/16in. nitro replacement barrels (circa 1953) and subsequently sleeved circa 1977, acanthus scroll engraving at the breech ends, rib re-engraved 'W. W. GREENER MAKER 40 PALL MALL LONDON WORKS BIRMINGHAM', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke
No.2 with 28in. Greener trade mark nitro replacement barrels (in 1955), scroll engraved at the breech ends, rib gold-inlaid '2' and engraved 'W. W. GREENER. MAKER. 40 PALL MALL. LONDON. WORKS BIRMINGHAM.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 3/4 choke, scroll-back treble-grip actions with arcaded fences and side shoulders, toplevers gold-inlaid with a crown and '1' and '2', automatic tang safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, rolled-edge triggerguards, possible repairs to tangs, action flats with minor cracks at bridges, bold acanthus scroll engraving interspersed with ears of wheat, oak leaf bordering and with game scene vignettes of hound and fowl, the triggerguards with hounds retrieving rabbits, 15in. highly-figured stocks (No.1 cracked at head, No.2 with setting crack to rear of top tang) with horn inserts at the drop points, including 1 1/2in. leather covered extensions, fore-ends with Deeley & Edge patent release catches, gold-inlaid '1' and '2', horn spearpoint finials and ornate chequering borders, weight 6lb. 8oz., in a brass-cornered oak and leather case with green velveteen lining, gold-tooled black pigskin leather label and some accessories
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that these shotguns originated from an order placed by their London establishment. They were ordered as a true pair initially but built with different stock dimensions and at a cost of 125 guineas each. The No.1 gun was engraved by Tomlinson and completed December 1927 and the No.2 gun was completed February 1931. The original owner's name is not recorded.
