Product Details

A SHONA SCULPTURE OF A WARTHOG WITH YOUNG
approx. 12in. base, 8in. high,

Provenance: Shona Art is a style of sculpting from verdite, serpentine or soapstone, originating from in Zimbabwe (and named after their most populated tribe - Shona')
The Shona Art movement is a relatively new phenomenon, now recognised as being probably the most important art movement to come out of Africa in the twentieth century.

First gaining international exposure in the late 1950's when the then Curator of the National Gallery in Harare discovered the work being created by local artists, he gave it unprecedented coverage and encouragement to the artists. In the 1960's sculpture communities began to emerge in various parts of Zimbabwe and the movement has grown exponentially since then.

The first major exhibition of Shona Art to reach the UK was opened by H.R.H. The Prince of Wales at the Barbican Centre in the 1980's, but it was not until the year 2000, when a a major exhibition of the genre took place at Kew Gardens, that the movement became more generally appreciated here.
