Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this shotgun was completed in 1878 for Admiral Hobart Pasha.
Augustus Charles Hobart-Hampden was born 1st April 1822, the 3rd son of the 6th Earl of Buckinghamshire.
He spent much of his life at sea and proved to be a courageous and resourceful commander of men and ships. He entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman and served first off the coast of Brazil where he saw action in the suppression of the slave trade. By 1855 he had been promoted to captain and took part in the Baltic Expedition in command of H.M.S. Driver.
He retired from the Royal Navy in 1862 with the rank of post-captain but the salt ran deep in him and he stayed ashore for only a brief period before becoming a highly successful blockade runner during the American Civil War. He ran the blockade eighteen times in total taking arms into Charleston and returning with cotton. Hobart entered the Ottoman service in 1867 with the rank of rear-admiral. He commanded with much elan and was rewarded by the Sultan who bestowed on him the title of Pasha.
Hobart published his memoirs in 1886, entitled 'Sketches of My Life' which proved popular if not historically accurate. He died in Milan on 19th June 1886.
