AN EXTREMELY UNUSUAL 8-BORE PERCUSSION FOWLING PIECE, serial no. 5011,
circa 1856, possibly for the Colonial Market, with round tapering damascus 34in. barrel (missing under-rib and thimbles), signed at the breech 'WILLIAM GREENER, 42 ELY PLACE HOLBORN, LONDON' and 'LAMINATE STEEL INDESTRUCTIBLE BY GUNPOWDER', the legend terminating in a large area of scroll engraving, nickel fore-sight bead, squared patent breech with three half-ribs, fully scroll-engraved top-tang and top half-rib, engraved platinum plug, slightly rounded border and scroll engraved bar-action lock signed 'W. GREENER' and moulded around the hammer, the tail featuring an oval engraved with a hunting dog, scroll engraved flanged hammer (spur missing), unusual figure-enhanced teak half-stock with scalloped edged chequered panels to the pistol-grip and fore-end, further segmented carving to the pommel of the pistol-grip, blued iron heel-plate with scroll engraved long top-spur framing an engraving of two pheasants in a grassland setting, scroll engraved trigger-guard tang with grip-safety bar, scroll engraved trigger-guard bow with central engraved panel of a further hunting dog, stylised urn finial, carved contoured side-cheeks, horn fore-end cap with engraved iron ramrod throat, original nickel-mounted ramrod (worm end missing) and complete with a large calibre (possibly associated) three-piece cleaning rod

Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this shotgun was completed circa 1856 but that no other records are extant.
