28in. Whitworth-steel nitro chopperlump barrels, ribs engraved 'JAMES WOODWARD & SONS. 64 ST JAMES'S STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL', and gold-inlaid '1' and '2' at the breech ends, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke, carved arcaded fences, toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, profusely engraved with fine acanthus scrollwork, No.1 retaining much original colour-hardening, No.2 retaining traces of original colour-hardening, 14 1/2in. well-figured stock with Prince of Wales semi-pistolgrip and horn buttplate (No.1), 14 5/8in. figured replacement stock with Prince of Wales grip and horn buttplate, repaired at toe, (No.2), weight 6lb. 4oz. Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this pair of shotguns were completed in December 1927 with 28in. barrels for Sir Felix Cassel, Bt.
Sir Felix Maximilian Schoenbrunn Cassel, 1st Baronet, P.C., Q.C. was born in Cologne September 1869 to a wealthy Anglo-German family. He was educated at Harrow before going up to Oxford to read law and was subsequently called to the Bar in 1894 before taking silk in 1906. He also acted as an M.P. for a number of years and represented St. Pancras West between 1910 and 1916.
He was commissioned into the London Regiment in 1914 and served in France the following year before being re-called to London to assist the Judge Advocate-General. He was then appointed to that position in spite of concern from some quarters arising from his mixed origins. He was created a baronet in 1920 and later entered the Privy Council in 1937.
