A GOOD .52 CAPPING BREECH-LOADING SINGLE-SHOT SERVICE RIFLE, MODEL 'NEW MODEL 1859', serial no. 47144,
circa 1861, with round, blued 30in. barrel signed 'SHARPS RIFLE MANUFG. CO, HARTFORD CONN.' forwards of the rear-sight and 'NEW MODEL 1859' over the breech, block and blade fore-sight, elevating ladder rear-sight, colour-hardened 'straight-breech' receiver marked 'C. SHARPS PAT. SEPT 12TH 1848' on the left hand side and 'R.S. LAWRENCE PAT. APRIL 12TH 1859' behind the hammer on the right, the attached lockplate stamped 'C.SHARPS PAT. OCT 5TH 1852', dropping breech-block with built-in cartridge-cutter, straight-hand walnut butt-stock with semi-crescent heel-plate and iron patch-box with sprung lid mounted on the right-hand side, under-lever forming the trigger-guard with sliding locking catch, three-quarter fore-end wood with three iron barrel-bands and under-barrel lug for a sabre-type bayonet, good traces of original colour and finish
