Product Details

ROBERT, PARIS
A SCARCE 'CALIBRE 26' (22-BORE) BASE-FIRE SINGLE-BARREL SHOTGUN, MODEL 'SYSTEME ROBERT', serial no. 424,
circa 1835, with 35in iron round barrel, bead fore-sight, twin sighting 'ears' on the lift-up breech-block, the breech block engraved with an oval bearing the legend '3 MEDAILLE D'OR FUSIL ROBERT BTE', long top-tang forming the locking lever extending to the comb, walnut one-piece plain straight-hand half-stock, iron heel-plate, trigger-guard bow with concealed cocking indicator, and shell carving to the fore-end tip

Other Notes: The 'Systeme Robert' guns were produced between approximately 1831 and 1840 and were an early attempt at using a self contained cartridge. Unlike it's slightly more successful contemporary, Pauly, the Robert system used a fulminate cap on the side of the cartridge that was crushed by the mechanism on firing. The special cartridge had a special notch to ensure correct alignment, and could almost be considered as the ancestor of the pinfire cartridge
