A .50 CAL PERCUSSION CAPPING BREECH-LOADING CARBINE, MODEL 'MAYNARD'S PATENT 2ND MODEL', serial no. 21931,
circa 1865, with break-open two-stage 20in. rifled barrel, applied blade fore-sight, folding leaf rear-sight with two additional leaves, off-set central hammer boxlock action, iron frame marked 'EDWARD MAYNARD PATENTEE, MAY 27 1851, DEC 6 1859', side-mounted saddle-ring bar, walnut butt-stock with military inspectors cartouche, iron heel-plate and iron under-lever forming the trigger-guard, the whole with strong traces of finish throughout
Other Notes: There were two models of Maynard supplied to the military, the first model had a butt-trap, was fitted with Maynard's priming system and had a target sight fitted to the top-tang, probably accounting for its accuracy during trials. Most of the 400 trial guns were in Southern armouries on the outbreak of the Civil War, where upon they were seized by the Confederates. The model eventually ordered by the Northern States was the second model (represented here). Simplified, the patch box was omitted, as was the target sight, and the tape priming system was replaced with a cap and nipple. Despite being delivered late, the carbines saw service with the 6th, 9th and 11th Indiana Cavalry units, and also with the 10th & 11th Tennessee
