A RARE CASED .450 (BOXER) SIX-SHOT DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER, MODEL 'TRANTER'S 1863 ARMY', serial no. 5548,
circa 1866, with octagonal 6 1/4in. barrel, the top-flat signed 'S. GRANT, 67A St. JAMES'S ST. LONDON', engraved band at muzzle, barleycorn fore-sight, the top-strap with sighting groove extending over the breech, solid borderline engraved frame, plain cylinder with engraved rope band to front, polished hammer and trigger, chequered walnut one-piece grip, colour-hardened butt-cap with central lanyard ring, hinged 'TRANTER'S PATENT' articulated ejector-lever to the right hand side of barrel, the whole with the majority of its finish remaining, COMPLETE WITH its retailers mahogany storage case, compartmented and lined in green baize with provision for 48 rounds of ammunition in a tray and including a cleaning rod and oil bottle, hook and lock closure with parchment 'Stephen Grant' trade label to inside of lid
Other Notes: Tranter's Model 1863 Army revolver was tranters first entry into the 'service' handgun market using self-contained metallic cartridges. Initially manufactured in .442, some were converted to the military .450 round. The later production were generally only produced in .450, such as the example presented here
