DOCUMENTS CONCERNING THE LANCASTER FAMILY'S TRADE WITH INDIA: 1834-1925,
a) 15 March 1835 - Double sided hand-written inventory listing the weapons being shipped home from Calcutta by Lord William Bentink, after seven years as the first Governor-General of India. Lord Bentink embarked for England on the 20th March 1835. A year earlier he had negotiated for his possessions to be shipped back to England by Sir Charles Cockerell's shipping line. According to the attached double-sided hand-written inventory dated Calcutta 15th March 1835, Lord Bentink's 6 double barrel guns and also 2 from Messrs Mckintosh & Co were to be shipped back to England "… for sale and realization on account and risk of C. Lancaster, Esq."
b) A printed short history of Lord William Bentink's career in India as the governor-general.
c) 2 September 1862 - Original, hand-written copy of a letter sent to Major Neville Chamberlaine, CB in Her Majesty's Indian Army from the gunmaker, Alfred Lancaster of 27 South Audley Street, Grosvenor Square. This copy of the hand-written letter is signed by "A. Lancaster". (See p 309 of Don Masters' book, THE HOUSE OF CHURCHILL for more details about Major Neville Chamberlaine)
d) 30 March 1880 - Original, hand-written letter addressed to A Lancaster from the Maharaja of Bulrampur.
e) 18 July 1881 - Original hand-written letter addressed to Mr A Lancaster, Gun Maker, 27 South Audley Street, Grosvenor Square, London from the Maharajah of Bulrampur
f) Printed information concerning the Maharaja of Bulrampur
g) 28 December 1925 - Letter from W.S Hadaway at the School of Arts in Madras to the firm of Charles Lancaster regarding a pair of Charles Lancaster gold inlaid double barrel pistols Nos 365 and 366. These under-and-over copper cap pistols were made for the Maharaja Serfogie of Tanjore. The hexagonal barrels measured just over 8 inches. The price for the finished pistols in 1830 was £39.14.0d. Interestingly, this pair of pistols raised £55 when sold at auction in 1952.
