A COLLECTION OF HAND WRITTEN NOTES, included in this lot is the hand written letter that began a bitter controversy between gt teasdale-buckell, the famous author and h.a.a thorn, managing director of charles lancaster. also included are the original papers and press cuttings about thorn's single trigger mechanism at the centre of the acrimonious debate.
a) 26 August 1895 - GT TEASDALE-BUCKELL's hand-written response to H.A.A Thorn's complaint concerning his article in Land and Water listed below at (h). Teasdale-Buckell justifies his article by throwing doubt on Thorn's claims for his Single Trigger mechanism invention. NB GT Teasdale Buckell's book, EXPERTS ON GUNS & SHOOTING, was first published in 1900 and again in 1986.
b) Typed transcription of GT Teasdale-Buckell's letter of 26 August 1895.
c) 27 April 1895 - The original complimentary press cutting from p565 of THE FIELD sporting magazine concerning the Single Trigger invention of HAA Thorn, the managing director of Charles Lancaster & Company
d) 26 June 1895 - The original press cutting from p44 of The Shooters' Supplement to THE BAZAAR, discussing the latest Single-Trigger guns by Boss, Charles Lancaster and W.P. Jones.
e) April 1895 - Reviews of the Single Trigger invention will appear in five Norwich local papers.
f) 1 June 1895 - Photocopy of HAA Thorn's flyer reproducing the article in THE FIELD headed LANCASTER'S ONE-TRIGGER DOUBLE GUN.
g) 17 August 1895 - The press cutting from the sporting magazine, Land and Water edited by GT Teasdale-Buckell from 1885-1899, in which he reviews H.A.A Thorn's single trigger invention. After reading the review, Thorn complained to the author about the last sentence of the article that read: "For ourselves, we would as confidently shoot with the single-trigger as with any new action that had not stood the test in many hands of a season at least."
h) 21 March 1896 - Original press cutting of the subsequent Land & Water article by GT Teasdale Buckell giving details of H.A.A Thorn's first Single-Trigger Mechanism for Double-Barrel guns sealed under Patent No 5517. The timer was missing when Teasdale-Buckell first examined the gun and in this article Teasdale-Buckell states pointedly: "The 'timer' is, of course, the key to the invention …"
i) 1 April 1896 - Letter from patent agents, G.F Redfern & Co with which they enclosed Thorn's Patent No 5517.
j) 21 March 1896 - Original press cutting from p419 of THE FIELD, THE COUNTRY GENTLEMAN'S NEWSPAPER concerning Lancaster's Single-Trigger Mechanism for Double-barrel Guns and Rifles and in particular "the parts required for the proper working of the mechanism of the lock …"
k) 28 January 1904 - Printed version of HAA Thorn's Patent No 7046 applied for on 26 March 1903. This is a modification to Thorn's original Single Trigger Mechanism under Patent No 5517 of 1895.
