CORRESPONDENCE BEARING A RARE PENNY RED POSTAGE STAMP, FEATURING THE YOUNG QUEEN VICTORIA, April and May 1848, affixed to one of two letters sent to the gunmakers Charles Lancaster:
a) 20 April 1848 - A handwritten letter sent from the solicitors of the late Charles Lancaster to Sir E.M. Elton of Widworthy, Devon requesting settlement of the outstanding account for £2.10.-d.
b) 20 May 1848 - Sir E.M. Elton's response to the above letter. Affixed to the folded envelope addressed to Mr Lancaster, Bond Street is a rare Penny Red postage stamp. The letter was sent via the "Wilmington Penny Post". The Penny Red postage stamp has been cancelled by the number 379. This non-perforated penny red-brown postage stamp is believed to have used Die No 1, the original die in use between 1840-1855 and shows the features of the young Queen Victoria lightly shaded. This postage stamp has the letter "R" in the bottom left-hand corner and the letter "L" in the bottom right-hand corner.
