25 1/4in. nitro barrel engraved 'JOHN RIGBY & CO. 72 ST. JAMES'S ST. LONDON.', block-mounted open sights with two folding leaf sights, block-mounted bead fore-sight, receiver with thumb cutout, receiver ring engraved 'WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER OBERNDORF A/N/ 1899', bolt with adjustable peep-sight, floorplate with military style release, figured semi-pistolgrip stock with sling eyes,14 5/8in. pull including steel buttplate

Provenance: The vendor's research has established that this rifle was completed in October 1899 with a 26in. barrel regulated for a 173gr bullet for Walter Waring.

Walter Waring J.P., D.L. was born in 1876 the son of a Liberal M.P. He was schooled at Eton before being commissioned into the 1st Life Guards in 1897. He served with distinction in the Second Boer War and was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with six clasps as well as being mentioned in dispatches. During the Great War he saw action in France with the Yeomanry before spending the final year of the war with Naval Intelligence.
