A RARE 12-BORE TOPLEVER HAMMER EJECTOR GUN, serial no. 16598,
30in. Whitworth-steel nitro chopperlump barrels, rib engraved 'J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL', and numbered '6', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/2 choke, left wall thickness below recommended minimum, carved percussion fences, toplever engraved '6' in an oval, rebounding island locks with dolphin hammers, best fine bouquet and scroll engraving, retaining very slight traces of original colour-hardening, 14 3/8in. boldly-figured stock including 7/8in. rubber recoil pad, weight 6lb. 9oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed as No.2 of a pair of 12-bore Hammer Ejector guns in August 1902 for The Earl of Portsmouth.
Newton Wallop, 6th Earl of Portsmouth JP DL, (19th Jan 1856 - 4th December 1917) was elected Member of Parliament for Barnstable in 1880, a seat he held until 1885 when due to the Redistribution of Seats Act he became MP for South Molton until 1891. Upon the death of his Father in 1891 he succeeded to the Earldom and took his seat in the House of Lords.
Between 1905 and 1908, Lord Portsmouth served as Under Secretary of State for War in the Liberal government under Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman.
