F. HORSTER, SOLINGEN
A FINE BADEN GRENADIER OFFICERS SABRE WITH GILDED DAMASCUS BLADE,
circa 1880, with 32 1/2in. slightly curved spear-point damascus blade, wide single fuller extending for four fifths of the blade's length, carved and gilded arabesque panels at the forte, the left hand side example depicting a Roman soldier standing with a spear and drawn sword above the word 'EISENHAUER', the right example with a standard-bearer in 18th century military costume striking with a sword above the legend 'ECHT. DAMAST', the ricasso signed 'EISENHAUER' above 'F. HORSTER' on the right and 'SOLINGEN' on the left, the back of blade with carved stylised acanthus leaf decoration near the hilt, polished iron broad knuckle-bow and swollen cross-guard, broad rolled quillion, wire-bound sharkskin grip and polished curved iron backstrap, the whole in fine condition COMPLETE WITH its original polished iron scabbard with two loose suspension rings on bulbous mounts

Other Notes: These swords were carried by officers of the 109th and 110th Baden grenadier regiments and also the 111th-114th Baden infantry regiments
