Provenance: The vendor has kindly supplied the following information pertaining to his grandfather who commissioned this pair of shotguns.

"Major W.J.H.Hughes owned Middleton Hall Estate in Carmarthenshire, Wales, it is now The National Botanical Garden of Wales. He fought in the S.A. (Boer) War with The Royal Welsh Fusiliers, he fell in love with Africa, returned to Wales and sold up everything. He moved to Kenya, then later to Rhodesia/Nyasaland then to South Africa, where he died on his farm in the Drakensberg Mountains of Natal. He was a great hunter and bought his guns here in London, he held the World Record for a time, Greater Kudu horns measured 66.5", he shot it in Swaziland, (see Rowland Ward). He was badly mauled by a leopard, which he managed to kill, he was then carried on a litter by his bearers to civilization and medical treatment. He survived but his injuries put paid to his hunting."
