A RARE AND IMPORTANT PAIR OF 28-BORE FLINTLOCK RIFLED-CARBINES, no visible serial numbers,
Dutch, circa 1655, with swamped octagonal deeply rifled 24in. barrels, the top-flats signed 'HELLENDAEL UTRECHT' within an engraved pennant hailing forth from the mouth of a sea-serpent, small dove-tailed brass blade fore-sights, carved standing notch rear-sights with large rounded ears, engraved scrolls and tulips together with an engraved band at breech, curved and radiused border carved and scroll engraved pointed tail locks signed 'HELLENDAEL, UTRECHT', floral scroll carved hammers, scroll carved frizzen feet, feathered terminals to the frizzen-springs, walnut full-stocks with floral carving around the squared top-tangs, further floral and scroll carving to both ends of the raised cheek-pieces and along the fore-ends, the centres of the cheek-pieces with inlet iron oval escutcheons engraved with crests, scroll carved wood patch-box lids with central carvings of running deer to left-hand side of the butts, broad bulbous heel-plates with long engraved top-spurs extending for the full length of the combs, non-inlet trigger-guard tangs with feathered terminals, broad spurred trigger-guard bows, angled trigger-blades with 'hogs-bristle' set triggers, carved iron ramrod thimbles of barrel-form, iron fore-end caps, sling swivels and iron-mounted wood ramrods

Provenance: These rare and interesting pair of Dutch 17th century flintlock carbines, have the coat of arms from the Swedish Admiral Bielkenstierna. This noble family is described in the book Den Introducerad Svenska Adelns Attertavlor Part 1, Stockholm 1925. Admiral Bielkenstierna fought in the Norwegian War, also known as the first and second Karl Gustav wars (1655-1660), against the Dutch Navy.
