Product Details
GEORGE ROBINSON CO., USA
AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE .22 CO2-POWERED SINGLE-SHOT AIR-RIFLE, MODEL 'O'CONNELL GAS RIFLE', no visible serial number,
manufactured between 1947 and 1949, with 19in. rifled barrel, ramp and blade fore-sight, aperture rear-sight, cocking piece to rear of receiver operating the loading port, gas shut-off lever to right hand side, stained hardwood half-stock and detachable co2 cylinder mounted vertically beneath fore-end
Other Notes: A producer of munitions for the war effort, the Robinson Company in East Rochester, N.Y. turned to the production of tooling for toys when hostilities ceased. They were subsequently approached by an engineer named O'Connell who had a design for a single shot co2 rifle. Coincidently, the giant Crosman Arms Corporation were promoting their new CG (compressed gas) rifles at local shooting clubs in the Rochester area at around the same time, so it is probably of no great surprise that the Robinson Co. product outwardly greatly resembles the Crosman product, and is often mistaken as a Crosman prototype because of its complete lack of markings. Internally however the differences are vast, with the O'Connell design being much higher quality. Unfortunately, then as now price was everything, and the Robinson Co. rifle soon disappeared into obscurity after only 100-200 were produced. Surviving examples are seldom encountered, especially outside of the US
