A RARE .44 (HENRY) C.F. ULRICH-ENGRAVED LEVER-ACTION REPEATING RIFLE, MODEL '1866', serial no. 79869,
for 1871, with 24 1/4in. octagonal barrel, the top-flat signed 'WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS, NEW HAVEN CT' over 'KINGS-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29 1866 OCTOBER 16 1860', dove-tailed fore-sight with nickel-silver blade, rotating dual standing notch rear-sight, the bronze open-topped receiver fully engraved with American scroll borders surrounding a circle featuring an American eagle at front left with a scene of a stag and a doe to the rear, the right side with a hunting dog to the front panel and a hunter engaging a bear to the rear, the top-tang drilled for peep-sight, the tapped holes with keeper screws, no model designation, faint signature to top tang under wood, the lower tang stamped 'X.X', figured walnut straight hand butt-stock (cracked through at wrist and repaired with bronze plates in antiquity), crescent brass butt-plate with central sprung trapdoor concealing a cavity containing the original take-down cleaning rod and jag, small sized finger-loop to underlever (slightly miss-shapen), figured walnut fore-end and scroll engraved nose-cap, full length under-barrel magazine, fitted with swivels
