A BRASS-CORNERED MAHOGANY PERCUSSION GUN CASE,
lining missing, boxing missing, the lid exterior with a brass escutcheon engraved 'Vice Admiral Wellesley from Providence Tool Company, October 8, 1875'
Provenance: Admiral Sir George Greville Wellesley G.C.B. was born 6th August 1814 to Gerald Valerian Wellesley, brother of the 1st Duke of Wellington, and Lady Emily Mary, daughter of 1st Earl Cadogan. He enjoyed a long and successful naval career and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy in 1828. Notable points in his service include his captaincy of H.M.S. Cornwallis during the bombardment of Sveaborg during the Crimean War and he went on to be C-in-C. of both the North American and West Indies Stations. He was later made First Naval Lord in November 1877 and in that capacity secured a sizeable increase in the number of ships laid-down.
He retired (although remained on the Navy List) in August 1879 and was advanced to Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in June 1887. He died at his home in London on 6th April 1901.
