AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE CASED 54-BORE PERCUSSION FIVE-SHOT DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER, MODEL ' TRANTERS PATENT COMBINATION REVOLVER', serial no. 3027,
circa 1860, with 5 7/8in. blued octagonal barrel, the top-flat signed 'E.M. REILLY & CO 502 NEW OXFORD ST LONDON', engraved band to the muzzle, dove-tailed pillar fore-sight, sighting groove to the top-strap, borderline engraved frame marked 'TRANTER'S PATENT', plain cylinder with rope engraving to the front edge, the circumference of the cylinder inscribed 'TRANTER'S PATENT COMBINATION REVOLVER', spurred hammer, chequered walnut grips, iron front and back straps with borderline engraved grip-cap, borderline engraved trigger-guard bow and hinged captive rammer mounted to the left hand side of barrel, retaining a fair amount of original faded finish TOGETHER WITH its retailers oak storage case compartmented and lined in maroon baize (faded to brown) and containing a bag shaped copper flask, patent bullet mould, oil bottle nipple key and a cap tin
Other Notes: The Tranter Patent Combination revolver was produced only in very few pieces and to date only seven examples including this one are known. Designed to accept an optional .442 rimfire cylinder, this actual revolver is dealt with on page 110 of Ron Stewarts excellent book 'The Firearms of William Tranter'
