A FINE AND RARE CASED .451 (WHITWORTH) PERCUSSION SPORTING-TARGET RIFLE, serial no. 494,
circa 1855, with blued 30in. barrel, the top signed 'WHITWORTH, PATENT', dove-tailed blade fore-sight, folding ladder rear-sight with two additional folding leaves, short sighting rib at breech with scroll engraved tip, two engraved bands and a stag at rest to the breech-block, platinum plug, fully border and scroll engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved bar-action lock signed 'WHITWORTH PATENT' (strong traces of colour), sliding safe forwards of the fully engraved hammer featuring a serpent stalking a gamebird, chequered walnut half-stock with iron patch-box inlet to right hand side of butt, the lid and hinge scroll engraved, further border and scroll engraving to the heel-spur of the iron heel-plate, silver vacant oval escutcheon to underside of butt, scroll engraved trigger-guard tang, bow and finial, the tang with raised chequered spur, engraved iron take-down wedge escutcheons and horn schnabel fore-end tip with no provision for ramrod, TOGETHER WITH the manufacturers original mahogany storage case, compartmented and lined in green baize, parchment 'Whitworth' trade label to inner lid and containing a number of period and original accessories including a nickel-topped leather covered powder-flask, the original Whitworth bullet mould, a tin for felt wads signed 'WHITWORTH', a nickel oil bottle and other sundry cleaning and maintenance items
