Product Details

PETER SPICER & SON
A VINTAGE CASED COMMON BUZZARD,
full mount of a common buzzard with prey, with a 'PETER SPICER & SON' trade label, measuring approx. 25in. x 22in. x 18in.,

Provenance: Peter Spicer (1839-1935) is one of England's best regarded taxidermists, specialising in mounted birds. His trademark use of painted backdrops was a personal touch he developed (he was an accomplished watercolourist in his own right) and one which was not taken up by the rest of the trade for some years. He was later responsible for the development of iron moulds from which plaster mannikins could be cast (the 'Tapiderm' process), replacing the traditional method of cleaning the skull, padding with fibrous stuffing and replacing the preserved skin over it.
Amongst his clients could be counted King Edward VII, the Spanish Royal family, the Shah of Persia and the Sultan of Johore
