28in. Whitworth-steel nitro chopperlump barrels, rib gold-inlaid '2 and engraved 'WILLIAM EVANS (FROM PURDEY'S) 63 PALL MALL ST. JAMES'S. LONDON. SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL', (very faint), 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke, Boss patent square bodied easy-opening action with hidden third bite, toplever gold-inlaid '2', automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, fences deeply carved with ornate foliate scroll and ribbon motifs, action and lockplates with bold acanthus scrollwork and beaded borders, brushed bright finish overall, 15 1/4in. highly-figured replacement stock (small repaired cracks at hand) and matching fore-end wood, weight 7lb. 4oz., in a canvas and leather case

Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this shotgun was completed as No.2 of a pair in 1905 with 28in. barrels for C.P. Wykeham-Martin, and that they subsequently re-sold it in 1917 to Major-General A.F. Knox-Gore
