A 14-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN SIGNED JOSEPH MANTON, serial no. 1589,

Product Details

A 14-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN SIGNED JOSEPH MANTON, serial no. 1589,
reputedly for 1801 with later conversion by patent breech to percussion, with re-browned triple-stage 33 1/2in. barrel banded at the intersection, bead fore-sight, gold band at breech, platinum vent, engraved top-tang, flat border-line engraved lock with pointed tail, signed 'JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON forwards of the scroll-engraved dolphin headed hammer, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, iron furniture including engraved trigger-guard bow, twin take-down wedges and replacement wood ramrod

Other Notes: The gun represented here is somewhat of an enigma. According to W. Keith Neal and D.H.L Back's book The Mantons: Gunmakers (vol. 1), serial no. 1589 is assigned to a double-barrelled 16-bore cap-lock signed 'Josh Manton'. The editorial states that given the signature and the fact that the barrels are unusually fully addressed, the gun they refer to was probably not made by Manton at all. Perhaps this is the real 1589, or possibly this is a case of miss-numbering.
