28in. replacement nitro chopperlump barrels (by the makers in 1974), ribs gold-inlaid '1' and '2' and engraved 'JAMES WOODWARD & SONS. 64 ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON. S.W.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/2 choke, arcaded fences, toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, fine acanthus scroll engraving, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, crosspins, some lockpins and screws blued, Gun. no. 2 one extractor guide broken,14 7/8in. boldly-figured replacement stocks, No.2 fore-end with insert repair, weight 6lb. 15oz., in their brass-cornered oak and leather case

Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this pair of shotguns were completed as No.1 and No.2 of a trio with 29in. barrels in August 1908 for Sir Charles Cust, Bt. They subsequently fitted new barrels to both guns in February 1974.

Capt. Sir Charles Leopold Cust, Bt., R.N., G.C.V.O., C.B., C.M.G. was born 1864 and served aboard several Navy ships including H.M.S. Minotaur, Thunderer and Alexandra. He was the 3rd Baronet but the title became extinct when he died in 1931. He was the subject of a celebrated oil by John Crealock which is held by the National Trust.
