A .58 PERCUSSION SINGLE-SHOT MUSKET, MODEL '1861 SPECIAL CONTRACT MUSKET', serial no. WR231823,
dated for 1863, with 40in. smoothbore barrel marked at the breech 'STEEL', block and blade fore-sight, rear-sight missing, traces of a US Eagle stamped to nipple-bolster, flat lockplate marked 'COLTS PT FA MFG CO, HARTFORD, CT' together with the date, walnut three-quarter stock, iron furniture including three barrel-bands, applied tack decoration at wrist and iron cup-ended ramrod, iron surfaces cleaned, worn woodwork
Other Notes: The general wear and additional decoration of this piece would suggest previous Native American ownership. It also show traces of having rawhide binding at the wrist and muzzle that has been subsequently removed.
