Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this shotgun was completed circa 1928.
Boss & Co. were/are makers of 'best guns only' but this created a dilemma as they were often asked to provide guns that were not top drawer, either for children or keepers. Clearly that didn't was to dilute their name or reputation, but were reluctant to refuse the business. John Robertson came up with a typically neat solution, and that was to have guns built under his name.
Production of Robertsons began soon after the Great War and continued until the late 1960s, although they were always built in relatively small numbers. Boss had the guns built in Birmingham, often by the reputable John Harper, before engraving and finishing them off at their Kew factory.
The idea of a second tier gun was re-kindled in 2004 when Boss began offering guns under the Robertson name in both side-by-side and over/under format, but with the guns being sourced overseas.
