29in. sleeved nitro barrels, rib engraved 'BOSS & CO. 73. ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.', and gold-inlaid '1', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/4 choke, diminutive toplever gold-inlaid '1', automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, Boss patent single trigger, rolled-edge triggerguard, best fine floral bouquet and acanthus scroll engraving, brushed bright and blued finish overall, 15 3/4in. boldly-figured replacement stock including 5/8in. ebonite extension, weight 6lb. 15oz.
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this shotgun was ordered January 1901 as No.1 of a pair with 29in. barrels by Gardner Bazley, Esq.
Gardner Sebastian Bazley was born 14th October 1863 to Sir Thomas Bazley, 2nd Bt. and Elizabeth Gardner at the family seat, Hatherop Castle. He gained an M.A. at Oxford before going to the Inner Temple to study law. At the time he ordered this shotgun he was High Sheriff of Gloucester and was a Captain with the 4th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. He died 22nd June 1911.
