JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON
A CASED 20-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, serial no. 5429,
for 1811 with later conversion to percussion, with probably shortened 27 1/4in. twist iron barrels, the raised top-rib signed 'JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON', scroll engraving to rib-end, platinum plugs, border and scroll engraved slightly curved bevel-edged stepped-tail locks signed 'JOSEPH MANTON, LONDON', scroll engraved slab-sided dolphin-headed hammers, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist, clipped corner rectangular silver escutcheon engraved with an unidentified coat of arms behind the top-tang, iron heel-plate with scroll engraved long top-spur, scroll engraved trigger-guard bow and tang (traces of colour), and brass-mounted mahogany ramrod, TOGETHER WITH a mahogany storage case, re-lined in green baize (lid lining missing)
Provenance: The coat of arms is possibly that of the Adair family from the grand Flixton Hall near Bungay, and it is possible that this gun was the property of Sir Robert Shafto-Adair, 1786-1869, who was created first Baronet in 1838. He latterly held a commission in the Life Guards.
