ARCHIBALD STUART-WORTLEY
'THE GRANGE', A SIGNED AND FRAMED PRINT OF PARTRIDGE DRIVING IN HAMPSHIRE,
overall size approx. 40in. x 27in. and depicting a double-gun day at Lord Ashburton's famous shoot The Grange, dated 1892, single-mounted in a wood and gilt frame

Provenance: Below is an extract from the Daily Telegraph, 11th October 1905 concerning the death of Stuart-Wortley, the celebrated artist who was born May 1849:

"Mr Stuart-Wortley was in his fifty-seventh year. He was the son of the late Right Hon. James Stuart-Wortley, brother of the second Lord Wharncliffe. After leaving Eton and Merton College, Oxford, where he received his education, he studied art at Dusseldorf, and on returning to England enjoyed the unique privilege of being received into the studio of the late Sir John Millais; the only student whom that distinguished painter ever taught. Landscape at the outset engrossed his attention. His first success was a striking one. A picture of "Wharncliffe Chase," with which he started his career as an exhibitor, was accepted by the Royal Academy, hung on the line, and found a purchaser in the Duke of Northumberland. Of his numerous sporting pictures mention may be made of Partridge Driving," painted at Lord Ashburton's Hampshire seat, The Grange, Northington, and now in his lordship's possession."
