W.R. PAPE, NEWCASTLE
AN EXQUISITE 16-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-GUN, serial no. 1630,
circa 1868, with 31in. browned damascus barrels, the top-rib signed 'W.R. PAPE NEWCASTLE ON TYNE, WINNER OF LONDON GUN TRIALS IN 1858, 1859 & 1866', scroll engraved rib-end and band at breech (strong traces of colour), engraved platinum plugs, fully scroll engraved top-tang with an oval scene of a snipe in flight, border and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'W.R. PAPE', raised hammer-tables, carved and scroll engraved hammers, both locks and hammers retaining much colour, figured walnut half-stock carved around the locks with drop points to the rear and chequered at the wrist with a contrasting chequered panel at the join forwards of the comb, scroll engraved shield-shaped gold escutcheon initialled 'R.J.', short top-spurred iron heel-plate with scroll engraved panels surrounding the screw-heads, border and scroll engraved trigger-guard tang and bow, the bow featuring an engraving of a barrel-less stock and action of a muzzle-loading gun, scroll engraved finial, fully chequered fore-end with central carved border-line, scroll engraved ramrod throat, bevel-edged doughnut thimbles and white-metal mounted ramrod
Provenance: The holder of the records have kindly informed us that this shotgun was built for Pape by the maker Bezant (probably Arthur Bezant) and purchased in November 1871 for the Rev. R. Foster of Choppington Vicarage.
