Provenance: The revolver comes with a letter from The National Army Museum with the following information from the Army lists regarding Colonel Charles Jefferys Watson Allen:
'It would appear that C.J.W. Allen was Ensign in the 15th (The Yorkshire East Riding) Regt. of Foot from 1850 and had reached the rank of Captain in that Regiment by 1856. In 1861 he acquired a Captaincy in the 2nd (Royal North British) Regiment of Dragoons. During the late 1860's and 1870's he was on half pay. It was only 1880 that he obtained the Colonelcy of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the 13th, the Prince Alberts (Somersetshire Light Infantry). This you will understand is a very different matter to being Colonel of the Regiment as a whole. This battalion was based at Taunton.
The 15th Foot served in Ceylon from 1847-1855, though I have no information as to which officers were then present, or on the war service of C.J.W. Allen, if any.'
Colonel Charles Jefferys Watson Allen (1832-1893) was born in to the Allen / Jefferys families, the Allens being a notable West Country family with traceable history back to the thirteenth century. The family home was Lyngford House near Taunton, built circa 1830. Col. C.J.W. Allen was a J.P and High Sheriff of Somerset in 1884. A predecessor of his, Judge Jefferys presided over the 'Bloody Assizes' trial of The Duke of Monmouth and his supporters following his unsuccessful attempt to overthrow James II in the Monmouth Rebellion of 1865.
